Our story

By the time Thomas Custom Woodwork first received licensing in 1986, the owner, Frank Thomas, already had substantial experience in rough and finish carpentry under his belt.  Given his additional background as a drawing and paint artist, woodwork design and manufacturing was a natural fit.

In its early years the business focused mainly on finish carpentry, and is responsible for beautiful wood mouldings, casings, and ceilings found in homes throughout the greater Sacramento area and beyond.   Later, the business expanded its offerings to include custom mantels, bookcases – many of which included “hidden” features – and a variety of other items. 

As an interest in engineering grew, so did the focus on cabinetry.  Cabinets are a puzzle of design, efficiency, space, appearance, and feel.  The work “shows” and must be handled with care; custom work is challenging, but we take it on willingly.

 The first shop existed in the owner’s garage.  Eventually more space was needed, but how much?  Some advised expanding as much as possible; forget about custom work and focus on “stock” items.  Use set specifications and sell large volumes.  Some advised hiring many more people and increasing the volume of existing work.   Let go of personal service somewhat.  Neither of those ideas or others seemed right for us.  The decision?  Over time, obtain just a bit more space and hire just a few more people.

So, this isn’t a story of great expansion or industry domination.  It is to let you – our clients – know that the decision to operate our business as it does today was a conscious one, and that you were on our minds when we made it.

Our goals have never changed; we will continue to provide the highest quality craftsmanship with one-on-one service,  and always remember that our clients are entrusting us with their homes.
